ICFs were a natural choice for the basement and stem walls of this mountain home at the base of Kendrick Peak. Winter storms can dump 3-4 feet of snow and temperatures drop below freezing frequently. The ICFs will provide excellent insulation for the basement and the edges of the first floor, and a durable, strong foundation for the 2'x6' 2-story frame walls. Having a local supplier provide materials and support for a quick ICF installation was important due to the short summer construction window. This is the Marshall house North of Williams, AZ just east of the Howard Mesa development. The project is an owner builder project that is getting ready for pouring concrete. The bracing is a bit overkill but why not be a little on the cautious side. Either way the owner-builder had taken great lengths to do the job right and will be glad he did in the end. Beyond the stunning views of the San Francisco Peaks the site is frequented by deer, elk and other wildlife in the early morning and evenings.

Earth Day Event

On Saturday morning we headed to the City Hall in Flagstaff, Arizona for the annual Earth Day Event. There was a fantastic turn out and talked with many people who were looking for alternatives in building their next house. This year compared to even a few years ago there was more knowledge of ICF and the process. When we first started marketing at the Sustainable Building Fair most questions were, 'What is that?'. Just two years later the questions were more specific surrounding topics of how environmentally friendly the product was, how energy efficient, and whether we could deliver the product out to the reservation. We are glad to help out all those on the reservations. Soon we will be having a project starting in Tuba City. We ship nationally and can have the product delivered to your location with out a problem. Along with Sam there were five volunteers from all over the United States and about six Peruvian workers who contributed to the effort. According to Sam, 'the material goal of completing the roof was accomplished, however the emotional, spiritual and humanitarian benefits continue with both our kids and we lucky volunteers who took part in the celebrations leading up to and of course on Christmas day with the girls and children.' Most of them had never had a Christmas tree or ever received a Christmas present. Sharing gifts with them and the sharing with the kids the true meaning of Christmas was absolutely wonderful.

'We were the only family for these precious children and the smiles on their faces and the hug around our necks is all we needed to know that we had touched their lives in a very special way that was above and apart from our physical contributions.' 'They also touched our lives in a way that will stay in our hearts forever. I have found, as have others who have traveled with me to Peru, you can never forget these children.' Sam goes on to say 'this was my third year on the Amazon at Christmas and it is hard for me to imagine spending a Christmas away from beautiful my children there.'

Confirming these fire ratings in 'fire-wall' tests, ICF walls were subject to gas flames continuously which fluctuated with temperatures up to 2000F for over 4 hours.
